Since 2004, the Vancouver hip hop scene has been feeling the effects of a lower mainland music producer who goes by the same; Ephekz.
What started as an interest in crate diving and collecting rare vinyl sounds has enveloped into an anthrax of obscure and gritty influences, fueled from the soul of the sixties to the distorted pop classics of the eighties, assaulted a top of eerie underground bass, which has played host to a roster of local emcees.
With instrumentals as wide ranging as, what bob marley could label, 'chillin melodies' to that 'unsettiling feeling you have walking alone down an unknown street late at night in the pouring rain,' Ephekz lays diverse canvas for any emcee wishing to be a true artist. You can tell it's a love for the art, and he's been dippin' his brush in a lot of different paints.
When he isn't choppin' and slicin' samples from the old, overlooked, lost goodies on vinyl, he's defining his own style in digital art. You've probably seen his posters plastering telephone polls from Chilliwack to Mission. If you followed the posters to the address listed, you may have noticed some of his art work on the cd's being sold, or tossed into the crowd, by the performers.
With a list of collaborations, and one full release with Vancouver emcee Lenny Diko, the recent Redrummed Ep was the first display of Ephekz diversity. With an array of instrumentals, rare chopped samples and a few full songs to give rostering Up In Your Basement a chance to shine, the Redrummed Ep is a small sample into whats in store for his first full-length solo LP, which is soon to be released.
Asides from having to take time from his layering of samples, Ephekz has found himself posing for local newpapers, which he timidly admits. It's more about the expansion of the genre he's passionate about. It's about creating something that speaks for himself, through his music, and at the same time speaks to others. It's just another days work.
So, if you haven't felt the Ephekz in your area, expect to soon. Keep your eyes posted to the street corner collage and the racks of cds in your local record shop and keep your ears tuned to local college radio as well as to the low vibration that's rattling the front windows of a venue that you're waiting in line to get into.
Chances are they've been brought you courtesy of Ephekz.
